Living in Lenexa, Kansas
Founded in 1869, Lenexa is a well-planned community located about twelve miles South of Kansas City, Missouri. The 34.3 square mile city has a resident population of 50,000 people. According to legend, Lenexa is derived from the name of Shawnee Chief Thomas Blackhoof’s wife. After the Civil War, many German, Swiss, and Belgian families came to the area from the East and purchased lands from the Shawnee. Due to the bumper crops planted by the Europeans, Lenexa became known for its superior quality of spinach. The city holds several festivals throughout the year, including its Spinach Festival, which helps maintain a “small town community atmosphere.” Today’s Lenexa is a well-rounded community with its numerous eateries, businesses, and entertainment, becoming one of the brightest stars on the Kansas City horizon.
